Q: Why is cold process soap the best type for your skin?

A:
Healthy skin is dependant upon allowing one’s pores to breath while at the same time providing a barrier to retain moisture and protect your skin’s own natural oil balance. We make only vegetable based cold process soap because it contains the highest proportions of protective emollient oils and skin conditioning glycerin while remaining absent of potentially pore clogging animal tallow and harsh chemical solvents. Many of our customers have found that using properly formulated cold process soap reduces their dependence on hand and body lotion.

In contrast, most commercial soap bars are tallow based French mill, a process used to lower production costs and to remove valuable glycerin for use in high end cosmetics, creams and lotions. “Glycerin” soaps typically contain propylene glycol and other undisclosed chemicals used to create transparency and facilitate ease of production. Liquid soaps are often synthetic detergents rather than soap and contain chemical additives that promote user convenience over skin conditioning.

Q: Can I use your soap on my face?
A: YES!  Our soap is wonderful for your complexion. It's also a fantastic body bar. We don't believe anyone should treat any part of their body with less reverence than their face, so we describe our soaps as face and body bars. Most "complexion" bars on the market cost twice as much as ours but offer much less in terms of skin conditioning ingredients.

Q: Do you make "castile" soap?
A:
Pure castile soap by definition should be made from 100% saponified olive oil. Our bars are 50% olive with coconut, palm and castor used for their specific attributes. Pure castile bars don't lather well. Pure coconut bars tend to be drying to the skin. Our blend of Coconut, Palm and Olive offers the perfect balance of lather, cleansing, and skin conditioning. Take our 30 day challenge -- use nothing but Good Witch's Brew Soap and you'll notice the difference in your skin.

Q: I've noticed that some handmade soaps discolor and smell funny. Why?
A:
Emollient soaps contain excess skin conditioning oils. Due to oxidation, these can go rancid quickly if certain measures aren't taken. We use grapefruit seed oil extract as an antioxidant to naturally preserve our soaps. We also box our soaps to help keep them fresh until you're ready to use them. Still, you should keep in mind that natural cold process soap is best used within about year. If you should purchase a bar from a store at regular price that has lost it's scent please give us a call and we'll replace it.

Q: Can I order a custom scented batch of soap or a different size bar?
A:
Unfortunately, we don't have ready capability to respond to these types of requests. Suggestions are welcome however and may in some cases be included as part of future offerings.

Q: Why don't you offer a liquid soap?
A: Though we've had many request for liquid soap, we have yet to discover a formula that meets our standards of product purity. Most liquid soaps contain added chemical ingredients to prevent discoloration, bacterial growth, and pump clogging.

Q: Will your soaps help my skin condition?
A:
We honestly don't know and we have to recommend that you consult a specialist. We don't wish to make non-science based claims, although we have had positive feedback regarding improvements for a variety of ailments from our customers ranging from respiratory allergies to eczema. From our informal research and personal experience, we believe that many of the chemical additives and petroleum based ingredients typical of mainstream skin care products may exacerbate or even cause adverse skin and other medical problems.
